Hopefully, you’ve heard, but Expressway is here with the scoop. Philadelphia is the home to the BlackStar Film Festival, running August 1-4, 2019 for its eighth consecutive year. The festival will be taking place at some of Philly’s top-class venues:
- Lightbox Film Center
- Pearlstein Gallery
- World Cafe Live
- ICA
- Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts
Philly is home to many great film festivals, and BlackStar is no exception. What BlackStar offers is a space by which filmmakers can share stories that often go unheard or are erased. The festival is guided by its mission to elevate the voices of the African diaspora & Indigenous communities from around the globe.
This year’s opening reception will begin at the end of the festival’s opening day. We hope to see you at World Cafe Live at 10 p August 1, 2019, for the opening party, but not before attending BlackStar’s inaugural BlackStar Pitch competition at noon the same day at the ICA. Eight contenders will pitch projects in front of a live audience, with a winner to be awarded $1,000!
There is so much happening at this year’s festival (did we mention morning yoga?). We encourage you to get out to support filmmakers from around the world. Festival passes are available as well as tickets.
